I am Maître de Conférence in the Neurosciences department at the University of Aix-Marseille. I teach animal biology and psycholinguistics. My current research is about the cerebral basis of audio-visual interaction during single word perception. For that purpose, I use various combinaisons of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and classic experimental psychology methodology.
One of the hypothesis I'm working on these days is that the visual form of words (orthography) is not stored during learning to read and write in a newly contructed posterior brain network (in the visual areas), but is added to the existing speech network in the anterior brain.
After a sabbatical at the Freie Universität in Berlin (2009/2010) where I've learnt a bit more about emotions and language, I've started a project on the neural re-use of ancient brain structures (amygdala, insula) for new cognitive functions (language).
Next year (2012), I will join the brand new Comparative Psychology team in the LPC to work on the origins of language with baboons at the Primate Center of Rousset.
